The School of American Mah Jongg (“SOAM,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) is committed to protecting the personal information entrusted to us by prospective learners, enrolled learners, accredited instructors, and others who interact with our educational programs and services.
This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, share, and safeguard personal information.
This Privacy Policy applies to personal information collected in connection with School of American Mah Jongg courses, instructor accreditation activities, assessments, teaching practicums, learner communications, registrations, payments, online learning services, live virtual sessions, website interactions, and related educational and administrative activities.
Depending on your relationship with SOAM and the services you use, we may collect:
Name and contact information, such as email address, telephone number, and mailing address;
Registration, enrollment, payment, and transaction information;
Account information and course activity, including lesson progress, quiz results, assessments, practicum submissions, and completion records;
Communications, learner questions, feedback, evaluations, and support requests;
Professional biography, headshot, or other information voluntarily supplied for program-related purposes, including participation in an instructor directory;
Technical and usage information, such as IP address, browser or device information, access information, and data generated through online learning, scheduling, payment, communication, or website platforms; and
Other information voluntarily provided in connection with SOAM programs or services.
Payment transactions are processed through third-party payment providers. SOAM does not directly store complete credit card information.
SOAM may use personal information to:
Administer registrations, enrollments, and payments;
Provide access to courses, educational materials, and learner support;
Communicate about programs, course requirements, updates, and services;
Conduct quizzes, assessments, examinations, teaching practicums, and evaluations;
Maintain learner completion, accreditation, and credential records;
Issue certificates and other program credentials;
Administer optional instructor-directory participation and other services for which an individual has provided information or consent;
Respond to questions, support requests, or complaints;
Improve educational quality, programs, website functionality, and learner experience;
Send optional promotional or marketing communications where appropriate; and
Meet applicable legal, administrative, business, or accreditation requirements.
SOAM seeks to collect only personal information reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it is obtained.
Learners and other individuals are encouraged to provide accurate information and to notify SOAM when relevant contact or program information changes.
SOAM uses third-party service providers to support functions such as online course delivery, payment processing, scheduling, email communication, video conferencing, forms, file storage, website hosting, and other business operations.
Personal information may be shared with these providers only as reasonably necessary for the services they perform.
SOAM does not sell, trade, or rent personal information to third parties.
Information may also be disclosed when required by law, when reasonably necessary to protect legal rights or safety, or when authorized by the individual.
SOAM's website and third-party platforms used to provide our services may use cookies or similar technologies to support website functionality, maintain user sessions, track course progress, understand website and platform usage, and improve the user experience.
Users may be able to control or decline certain cookies through their browser or device settings. Disabling cookies may affect the functionality of some website or course-platform features.
SOAM uses reasonable administrative and technical measures to protect personal information against unauthorized access, loss, misuse, alteration, or disclosure.
Payment information is processed through third-party payment providers using their security systems and practices.
No electronic system or method of transmission can be guaranteed completely secure. SOAM nevertheless takes reasonable precautions appropriate to the nature of the information and its operations.
Personal information and educational records are retained for as long as reasonably necessary to administer SOAM programs, maintain appropriate learner and accreditation records, meet business and accreditation requirements, resolve disputes, and satisfy applicable legal obligations.
When information is no longer reasonably required, it may be securely deleted, destroyed, or anonymized as appropriate.
Individuals may contact SOAM to request access to or correction of personal information maintained about them or to raise a privacy concern.
Requests will be reviewed in accordance with applicable law and legitimate recordkeeping requirements. Certain records, including records associated with course completion, assessment, accreditation, financial transactions, or legal obligations, may need to be retained even after a request for deletion.
Recipients of optional promotional or marketing communications may unsubscribe using the method provided in the communication or may contact SOAM to request that such communications stop.
Administrative, transactional, accreditation-related, or program communications necessary to provide an enrolled service or maintain an accreditation relationship may still be sent.
SOAM websites, courses, educational materials, or communications may contain links to websites or services operated by third parties.
SOAM is not responsible for the privacy practices, content, or policies of third-party websites or services. Individuals are encouraged to review the privacy policies of those third parties.
Because SOAM provides online educational services and uses third-party technology platforms, personal information may be processed or stored outside an individual's state or country.
SOAM selects and uses service providers for legitimate operational purposes and seeks to handle personal information responsibly in accordance with applicable requirements.
SOAM's courses and services are not directed to children under the age of 13, and SOAM does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
If SOAM becomes aware that personal information from a child under 13 has been collected without appropriate authorization, reasonable steps will be taken to delete it.
Anyone with a concern regarding the handling of personal information should contact the School of American Mah Jongg.
Privacy concerns will be reviewed promptly and may also be addressed under SOAM's Complaints Policy where appropriate.
This Privacy Policy will be reviewed at least annually and may be updated sooner when necessary to reflect changes in SOAM's programs, technology, operations, legal obligations, privacy practices, or accreditation requirements.
The current version and effective date will be posted on the School of American Mah Jongg website.
